BumberShoot

A theoretical festival branding redesign.

Bumbershoot is more than just an annual music and arts festival; it’s a long-standing tradition rooted in Seattle history. This community-focused event celebrates the unique voices of Washington in art, performance, literature, and more. The core of Bumbershoot is the music, with multiple stages hosting bands, singers, and performers. By spotlighting indie creatives and empowering creative culture, Bumbershoot has been influencing the music scene of Seattle since 1971.

For this redesign, I took the insight of Bumbershoot creating, hosting, and being Seattle’s Soundtrack and made it literal. Blending the music of Bumbershoot with iconic downtown landmarks to show the intertwined foundational layers of Seattle culture.

Over the past few years, Bumbershoot has placed greater emphasis on different kinds of art and performance. This led to the creation of different Districts within the festival, the two main ones being Recess and Fashion. In the Recess district, you can catch movement-based performances from local groups and individuals. The Fashion District hosts multiple fashion shows to spotlight local creatives and art, with booths available for shopping as well.

For this aspect of the redesign, I kept the same idea and general style as the original posters, and made small changes to convey the novelty and inherent flashiness of the districts. I utilised some more niche Seattle landmarks to convey that, despite these parts of Bumbershoot being new, they still have deep cultural roots within the city.
